Technical Info - Extruder Basics
LOOMIS PRODUCTS extruders have been designed to meet a wide range of requirements in the extrusion of ceramics, ferrites, tungsten carbides, and powdered metals in practically every shape and form; including rods, machine components and catalytic substrates (honeycomb).
A unique design feature of the LOOMIS PRODUCTS piston extruder is the patented double tilt system. This feature allows both the material cylinder and the press frame to be hydraulically tilted at any angle between 0 - 90°.
The ability to tilt the press frame and/or the material cylinder (either together or separately), permits the most efficient loading and operating positions to be determined and set.
The horizontal position is typically used where parts have a high green strength (after extrusion), and can be cut using a mechanical cutting system.
The Vertical position is typically used for parts with low green strength, thin walls, or complex profiles that would otherwise deform if extruded horizontally.
Extrusion of delicate parts and / or parts that are prone to creep ( low binder strength ) can be optimized by way of angular tilt adjustments of the ram; thereby reducing adverse effects of gravity and friction on green parts. Efficient loading of material is also easily accomodated.
It is possible to set the position of the frame so that parts can travel on a guide after they are extruded ... the angle is set such that gravity and friction do not deform the part.
